February 15, 2006 Open Forum on Duquesne's Middle States Re-Accreditation Process
Duquesne held an open forum on February 15 in Fisher Hall with approximately 50 Duquesne students, faculty and staff in attendance. The goal of the forum was to share information about the re-accreditation process and to invite questions and comments.

Dr. Dan Watkins, Middle States Steering Committee member and Professor of English, provided introductory remarks on the importance of the process to the institution: "In short, my point is that beyond the particulars of the self-study work in which we are engaged (gathering data, developing assessment models, writing reports, developing research questions, and so on) the overarching significance of our task is that it gives us an opportunity to reflect upon, and continue to build on, improve, and enliven, a specific community-Duquesne University-so that it can be sufficiently healthy, strong, and self-aware to contribute meaningfully, and hopefully, in a transformative way to the larger society."

Dr. Elizabeth Sibolski, the liaison to Duquesne from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education spoke about the purpose of accreditation, primarily for institutional improvement, as well as formal evidence of compliance with standards. According to Dr. Sibolski, the University's mission is critical as the foundation and lens through which the Middle States evaluators will review the institution. She continued that the next step for Duquesne is the process where research committees begin their work. She emphasized that this phase will involve many people campus-wide. After the research committees complete the institutional research and analysis, they will submit their draft reports to the steering committee. The draft of the self-study report will be made available to the Duquesne community for review and comment. The final document is expected to be submitted to Middle States in the fall of 2007.

Duquesne Community Invited to Review and Comment on Self-Study Design Draft Document
In 2007-2008 the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association will conduct an accreditation review of Duquesne University. To prepare for the visit and evaluation by the review team, we are engaged in an institutional Self-Study. The purpose of the Self-Study is to assess the University's past and current performance and to plan for the future, by documenting the University's progress since the 1997 accreditation review, identifying our strengths, recognizing our challenges, and making recommendations to meet those challenges in the future.

The Middle States Steering Committee has prepared a Self-Study Design Document to serve as a guide through the process. All members of the Duquesne University community are encouraged to read this report, either in its entirety or at least those sections that are of particular interest, and provide the committee with comments and suggested changes. The Self-Study Design Document is available on this web site by selecting the link below, and print copies will be distributed across campus, and will be available in the library. Copies can also be obtained by calling 412-396-5346. This web site also contains a link to the Middle States accreditation standards and an email form for submitting your comments.
